Breaking into the field? Looking for that promotion? Want to up your pay? There are many great reasons to pursue certification.
Breaking into the field?
It can be incredibly difficult to break into the field of sales engineering. Not only do you have to have the same rock-solid (usually superior) technical aptitude of your peers in mastery of your chosen vertical, you also need to exceptional communication skills. It is a rare individual that has both. Proving those competencies without a long standing successful track record working alongside sales or being in a management position makes it difficult to secure SE employment early in ones career. Obtaining a certification based on a rigorous testing model which verifies basic proficiency in all of the domains of excellence will certainly allow you to get your foot in the door with potential hiring managers and may become a prerequisite for applying to various SE-internship programs.
Improve your results
SEs who study the domains of excellence and review the recommended reading list are in a better position to close more business, period. A great many practicing field SEs have never seriously studied their profession, instead relying on gut feel and experience working with other SEs. Going through the process to certify will demonstrate (or reorient) to you best practices learned over many decades of research. We know–we experienced the same thing when building this program!
Looking to move up?
SE managers are increasingly looking at various metrics to help develop, measure, and promote their team members. Often, there are specific gates to promotion and pay raises. In addition, management only ever has so big a pot of funds with which to apply as raises to their teams–meaning they can’t afford to give lower performers the same raise as top performers. So how do you set yourself apart from your peers? Suggesting certification to your manager not only suggests seniority on your part, but you get to obtain something valuable that you likely don’t have to pay for and stays with you in future roles.
Have an MBO to fill?
If you are looking for a management-by-objective goal to meet your career performance targets, SE certification is a perfect demonstrable accomplishment with a low cost commitment from your company. Win win.
Looking to switch roles?
Even if you’ve been an SE for a few years, it can be hard to differentiate yourself from others in your field as you compete for coveted positions with companies that are well known and up and coming. SE positions are typically filled at 2:1 ratio of account managers to SEs, so there just aren’t that many great opportunities that become available. Chances are that for any given position there are dozens of potentially qualified individuals, and separating yourself from the pack, when the pack is trained in sales, is difficult. Certification is one of the only two ways you can quantitatively differentiate yourself from your peers and demonstrates you have a long term commitment to learning and going the extra mile.
